Notes from a hearing

While a more complete account of the City Plan Commission's unanimous vote yesterday to recommend that the Dallas City Council terminate the 99-year specific use permit that allows the far West club to operate as a dance hall can be found here, there are a couple of fairly noteworthy tidbits that didn't make the article.

First off, before the three neighborhood association presidents launched their official statements, Scott Clumpner of the Gastonwood-Coronado Hills association asked for audience members in favor of revoking the SUP to stand up. Probably one-third or more of the people attending the hearing took to their feet. It was an impressive show of unity.

The other interesting development occurred with the vote itself. Plan Commissioners voted overwhelmingly — unanimous would kind of indicate overwhelming, though, wouldn't it? — to bypass the recommendation made by the city's Development Services staff to hold over the matter for further advisement because of a lack of information.

A 15-0 vote to terminate the SUP coupled with the Commission overruling, if that's the right word, the city staff's recommendation should send a pretty strong message to City Council when elected officials make the final determination on the case.End of story
