This morning's perusal of my regular stops along the cyber-waves turned up an unfortunate discovery.
Yesterday, these guys — hey, Mike — reported the sudden demise of Kitchen 1924, which was picked up over here a little later in the morning.
A call to Kitchen 1924's main man, Shawn Horne, resulted in a voicemail message, which, so far, has yet to be returned. A trip to the now-vacant site revealed a memo posted to the wall — "Notice of Change of Locks" — issued by property management company Colliers International.
I spoke with a Colliers representative, Kimberly Danforth, inside the space — tables pushed to the sides and akimbo across the floor, pantries bereft of cooking utensils and foodstuffs — who said the restaurant had a few problems with the lease and rent but, "I thought things were all worked out, but it is what it is."
She also said there's no hope of Kitchen 1924 making a comeback.
Michael Durkin, the restaurant's general manager, posted the closest thing to an official comment anyone's received to the SideDish blog.
I'm sure we'll hear from Shawn as soon as he's recharged and bit and fielded what has to be an avalanche of calls. Until then, Godspeed, Foo Fighter.

This is a sad, sad day. They were the best! We will miss you and look forward to a new restaurant in the future.
In the meantime - the guy who owns Lakewood Tavern used to work at 1924, so head over there for a little taste of it!

Shawn, Michael, and all: thanks for a good run. You're good folks and you'll do well. You loved the 'hood and it showed.

Unfortunately tough economic times spell disaster for restaurants - chains or independents. Did you notice that Steak & Ale and Bennigans have declared bankruptcy? Not chapter 11 - we're talking about chapter 7 - dissolved. You can expect many more to come. It's really sad.

Awww, I was just there 2 weeks ago. Nice place, but they were really pricey. Too bad Gordon Ramsay didn't step in to save the day.
