'The Sound of Music' Opens at Woodrow

"The Sound of Music" opened last night at Woodrow Wilson High School and continues through the weekend.

The musical remains near and dear, and Lizzie's Cochran's wonderful voice as Maria should make this a first choice, particularly for families with kids and the desire to expose them to musical theater. There's singing, a family story, history, and more singing.

There are even enough soldiers to keep little boys interested. The Nazi march, though terrible, is wonderfully staged.

People expecting the average high school musical — and we don't mean the Disney version — this isn't it. The dads, moms, and students of Woodrow have put all their effort into this year's show. It's beautifully presented; artist Diana Goldberg's sets have been completed by the dad-driven crew and are incredible.

The opening mountain backdrop is almost realistic enough to give the audience vertigo. Captain Von Trapp's house is elegantly overstated.
